PROJECTS FOR 2009 - 2010

ANIMA as a group and the production company AnimaMusica produced five projects for full or partial execution in 2009/2010. All these projects will be sponsored under the Rouanet Law cultural activities program, and the PROAC ICMS Cultural Support Program, which is an initiative of the Government of the State of São Paulo.

  1. Setting up and running the National and International Ancient Music Association (Portuguese acronym, ANIMA). Artistic project with educational and social aims;
  2. Organizing concert and recording CD “DONZELA GUERREIRA – WARRIOR MAIDEN– an encounter of anima and animus.
  3. VIAGEM SONORA do TIETÊ ao AMAZONAS – organizing concerts and recording CD around the Langsdorff expedition reported by the inventor of photography Hercules Florence through his images and method of collecting "zoophonia" (animal sounds in or around the regions visited).
  4. TESTAMENTOS MUSICAIS – a meeting of the mystic and the rational - an international series of concerts featuring music from that of the Turkish dervishes to the monumental Musical Offering and The Art of Fuge by J. S. Bach, L. van Beethoven's last pieces for string quartets, and Olivier Messiaen's Quatour pour les fins du temps.
  5. MAR ANTERIOR - musical interchange between Brazil and Portugal – an international series of concerts featuring the traditional music of the Iberian peninsula, especially fado and its musical origins in the Brazilian modinha and the music of Galicia.



1. DONZELA GUERREIRA / WARRIOR MAIDEN

An entirely new ANIMA program The main theme is the warrior-maiden myth found in several cultures, involving the archetypal encounter between anima and animus, male and female in the same person. Music from indigenous Brazilian, African-Brazilian, and medieval European myths in a multicultural version performed by ANIMA, which debuted this new program in Milan, Italy, in December 2008, under the auspices of the Brazilian General Consulate in Milan, the Foreign Relations Ministry, and TAM airline. DONZELA GUERREIRA will be staged at the follwoing venues: the MUNICIPAL THEATER OF SÃO PAULO on the occasion of the launch of the new ANIMA website; “DES CORDES SENSIBLES” INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL in Cevennes, France; Festival Labeaume em Musiques; and TAGE ALTER MUSIK REGENSBURG festival in Germany.

Objectives

Record new CD and DVD (5,000 copies). Organize release concert and tour 12 cities in Brazil.

Returns:10% of CDs and DVDs pressed (500 copies) and 10% of proceeds from concert admissions. Sponsor's logo on all published material and campaign pieces (posters; programs; banners).

2. PYGMALION

First performance in Brazil of the one-act opera-ballet Pygmalion by the French Baroque composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. Project recommended by the Year of France in Brazil Commission. Partnership with the Musical Cultural Center of Juiz de Fora, the Baroque Orchestra of the 20th International Festival of Brazilian Colonial and Early Músic, and two French organizations, the Baroque dance company Compagnie L’Eventail and video production company 24 Images.

Objectives

Stage 4 performances - São Paulo (2); Rio de Janeiro (1) and Juiz de Fora (1) - and record a DVD with the full version of Pygmalion, written in 1748, with period instruments and dance.

3.ANIMA 20th ANNIVERSARY

ANIMA group annual maintenance plan. Artistic project with educational and social aims; includes organizing new concert and CD/ DVD recording; touring 18 cities, with concerts and educational workshops open to the public. Founding the Music Education and Performance Center (CEFIRMUS) for ongoing activities in the field of musical education, study and research of musical performance, training for performers, instrument workshops, courses, talks, musical series, a music and technology center , integrated with musical research and creative activiities undertaken by ANIMA. Administrative support and infrastructure for rehearsals, workshops and courses.

4. TESTAMENTOS MUSICAIS – a meeting of the mystic and the rational

An international series of concerts featuring music, from Turkish dervishes to the monumental works Musical Offering and The Art of Fuge by J. S. Bach, Beethoven's last pieces for string quartets, and Olivier Messiaen's Quatour pour les fins du temps. A total of 16 performances by 4 Brazilian and international groups in 4 cities of the state of São Paulo.

Total of 16 performances by 4 groups in 4 cities of the state of São Paulo.

2. AFRO-BRAZILIAN MUSIC IN THE CAMPINAS REGION

Book and CD with collected recordings of the ethnomusicology of slave-descendant communities and their musical practices in the region of Campinas. In partnership with Associação Cachuêra!

 

3. MUSIC FESTIVAL OF THE SÃO PAULO SAVANNA-CERRADO REGION - year 2009: Tribute to Villa Lobos

Concert and Lecture Series . Recording a documentary on DVD. A musical panorama looking at the paths and crossings of popular or folk culture and classical music in Brazil, since the modernist manifesto issued for the 1922 Modern Art Week, iconized by Brazil's greatest composer Villa-Lobos, who died 50 years ago. The project discusses a number of highpoints in the culture of Sao Paulo and Brazil that have all in their different ways featured an intertwining of popular and classical traditions, through to the current postmodern context and its implications for music.
