PAULO DIAS – percussion, organetto and research

Dias is a pianist, organist, percussionist and ethnomusicologist. He studied piano under Alfredo Cerquinho and, in France, under Anna Stella Schic, Pierre Sancan and Marie-Madeleine Petit. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in piano at Unicamp, studying under Fernando Lopes, and also attended the harpsichord courses by Helena Jank. He studied organ under Dorotéa Kerr. He is a pianist and teaches theoretical subjects at the Choir of the University of São Paulo. As a popular music percussionist, Dias played in concerts and recordings with renowned artists. He attended ethnomusicology courses under Tiago de Oliveira Pinto and Kasadi wa Mukuna at the University of São Paulo. Since 1988 he has been collecting data on Brazilian popular music traditions, especially on the African-Brazilian traditions in the Southeast. The results of that work have been featured in workshops, publications, radio, TV, recordings and exhibits. He regularly presents lectures and courses, and participates in symposiums and conferences in Brazil and abroad. Dias founded the Folk Dance Group Cachuera!, dedicated to the African-Brazilian repertoire of Southeastern Brazil. He founded and directs the Cachuera! Cultural Society, which intends to research, record and disseminate Brazilian popular culture.
